Eating Choices from page 2…...

Other suggestions are to reduce portion sizes, and increase the number of vegetables and fruits.  Recent studies encourage us to eat more than the previously recommended 5 servings of fruits/vegetables a day (some studies 7 to 9).  A serving is about ½ cup cooked and 1 cup of raw vegetables or fruit.  Since alcohol stimulates the appetite, you may wish to curtail alcohol consumption or try adding sparkling water to wine.

Text Box: Drug Costs Causing Concern...Confusion
Text Box: With all the confusion about prescription cost coverage, the American Association for Retired Persons has indicated that several companies now offer reduced rates for certain drugs. You may want to contact your suppliers directly or check with your pharmacist. Here are some cost-cutters that may help you:
ask for generic whenever acceptable with your doctor;
if a veteran, check with your local Veteran’s Administration;
try splitting pills (eg., if you need 30 mg/day, split a 60/mg. pill in half) as a 60-mg. pill is often lower in cost than two 30-mg. pills;
if affordable, buy 90-day vs. Text Box: 30-day supplies;
ask for physician samples whenever available;
regularly review all medications with your doctor, as you may no longer need some, or could take a lower-cost but similar drug.
